How to Know When to Call it Quits
By Melanie Benson Strick | January 17th, 2008Have you ever pursued a goal only to find that once you got there you aren’t happy? Do you every find yourself feeling blocked and frustrated trying to achieve a dream but feel bad wanting to quit?
Often we pursue a goal for all the wrong reasons. Here are a few that I’ve heard from people over the years.
- It’s important to your family or friends but not really important to you
- A successful mentor says it worked for them
- We think we want it but secretly we have doubts
- Part of us wants it, part of us doesn’t and there is a war going on inside
- It’s something we used to want but it doesn’t fit our new life
Seth Godin wrote a book called “The Dip: A Little Book That Teaches You When to Quit (and When to Stick).” In it he explores the inner frustration we all go through such as feeling like a failure for giving up. What if releasing something that doesn’t serve us anymore is just making room for something better?
Here are a few tell-tale signs that it’s time to let something go:
- It is not aligned with your values and priorities
- It has become a “should” rather than a “high payoff opportunity”
- You feel inside that this is all wrong (it’s important to get clear if this is fear or intuition).
- Pursuing the goal (or opportunity) makes you feel that you are not in your integrity or truth
- It’s an old belief or goal that you continue to pursue because you are embarrassed to give up on it.
- Pursuing the goal is at the expense of other higher payoff opportunities.
In addition to knowing when to call it quits, it’s also important to know if you should pursue the goal in the first place, right? If you need help with that, I’ll be covering it in my next blog post… or you can get on the Fast-Track to a 6 & 7 Figure Lifestyle Business today by becoming a member of the mastermind coaching program.

Hi Melanie,
Great post and excellent tips. Very thought provokign. It’s important we be authentic with ourselves when asking those tough questions.
I have another one for you…what if you are truly passionate about your goal and you are working diligently taking the steps necessary to accomplish it but you have partners who are hindering the progress and those partners are an intregral part of the project. In otherwords, if you dump them, the entire thing will fall apart. How would you handle that scenario?
Thanks, Mel!
